The Nature of Words is in Bend again next week. It is a great chance to hear some interesting authors or attend workshops. Sherman Alexie, author of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian among other books, is a featured guest. There was some good news in the Bend Bulletin this morning. The Crook County School Board has reversed the ban on this book!
I’ll get back to reviewing books soon. We’ve been laid low with the flu, but are definitely on the mend now.

Best Places to Get Books.
Your local library is a great place to get books. The Deschutes County Public Library system is excellent. It is possible to search and request books online. Any requests are then waiting near the library's front door for you to pick up and check out.
Another great place to get books is paperbackswap.com. It is free, except for postage, and the concept is pretty simple. You list books you are willing to mail to other people and order books others have posted. It does take a couple weeks or even longer to receive a book. I've had about 35 transactions with 2 books lost in the mail. I think it works better than a used book store exchange since you can specify the books you are interested in receiving. I have had pretty good luck finding some out-of-print books that my library did not have.
We do have a few used bookstores in town. Dudley's is downtown and I haven't had much time to browse there yet, but it looks great. There is also the Bookmark on Greenwood and The Open Book is right across the street. It is tough, though, with young kids to spend any time browsing through them to find something I really want.
